Do you give money to tramps/the homeless/beggars
Whatever they're called these days.

Personal preference obviously, I never used to but in this shocking weather we've had recently, I think what's a handful of change to me if it helps someone out. It's an interesting ethical question.

I always wonder how many are genuine though. But by same token another part of me thinks surely no-one does it for fun.

Cashless society must've really hit their takings in recent years though, they should get on contactless.

I regularly buy one a lunch deal from Sainsbury’s if he is sat outside. Money won’t help him but food will.

Re: Do you give money to tramps/the homeless/beggars
I used to occasionally, but not long ago I had to visit someone at some supported accommodation place near where i live. It houses families and singles that have been evicted or lost their houses/jobs etc. I walked past the singles bit and i recognised nearly all of them from the streets of my town.
This accommodation is paid for by the local council and with an address will all have dole. Havent given any of them anything since. Harsh maybe, but all 'homeless' i see in my town are all in this place

Re: Do you give money to tramps/the homeless/beggars
I don't because it's almost inevitable that the money will be spent on drugs or alcohol. Our social security is not generous but it does pay enough to afford sufficient food and basic lodging. Buying food for them allows their limited money to afford other things. I would personally hate to be outside in very cold weather but they do not have to be there on purely economic grounds. There is a real problem with substance abuse and mental ill health which are not adequately treated, but giving money will not address the issues.

Always to the British looking and a sucker for those with a dog, lots of ex servicepeople and some sorry old tales no doubt - apply the but for the will of God thought, particularly when out for the night pissing money without care

Never to the Roma types though, who get a strongly framed fuck off when they apply the high pressure method, dog or no dog - will of God thoughts pass me by on that lot

Yes I do.
There are many reasons people might find themselves homeless, and even if they arent genuine on occassion the amount i give them isnt going make a massive difference to me but might to them. Not prepared to just walk.past.

Re: Do you give money to tramps/the homeless/beggars
Even homeless charities can't agree on this.

I only ever buy them some food as I don't like the idea of financing someone's drug habit or the cunts that sell to them.

I give to those who dont ask. They're genuinely grateful unlike those who ask. Thise who ask probably buy drink and drugs. Those thst dont ask can di what they like as far as zIm concerned.

This is one of wife's areas of expertise. Buy them food and a soft / hot drink. All about the long term apparently.

Re: Do you give money to tramps/the homeless/beggars
Do I fuck. About 10 years ago this Romanian bint started touting the big issue in Epping high street. One day I asked her why she was begging in Epping when I knew there were no homeless shelters in the town. She claimed that local people put her up.

It turned out this was a load of bollocks and that she commuted into Epping every day from Leyton.

A couple of years before I had a chat with a scouser outside Langans pulling the same stroke. The doorman told me he’d been there years and was coining it.

I do sympathise with those suffering genuine hardship, but a lot of them are pro-beggars.

Re: Do you give money to tramps/the homeless/beggars
Thailand is a bit different, Most of the beggers have been trafficked and are put on the street to make money for the bosses. It's not nice walking past kids begging and just ignoring them.

One time I was walking down Sukhumvit (Main road in Bangkok) at night and a bird was sitting on the floor feeding a toddler and not begging at the time.I walked past her and thought fuck this I'm giving to her some money and went back and gave her the equivalent of a 10 quid which is food for a week in Thailand.

We also donated to keep a village orphans school open and will continue to do so.

People dump unwanted cats and dogs at the local temples so we buy 20 kilos of dried food for them every month

Re: Do you give money to tramps/the homeless/beggars
There's a Roma gypsy type who sells the Big Issue on the High Street. Must do OK out of it 'cos she has been there for years.

I thought when the Big Issue started it was supposed to help people for a bit to give them a life up not be a lifestyle choice.

Feel sorry for the mentally ill and substance dependent ones for about 10 seconds and then go on my way. It's a shit old world, still could be worse, in India millions start life on the pavement and never have the chance to escape it unlike the homeless here, many of whom end up on shit street through unfortunate circumstances which have often befallen them because they made some pretty shit choices at crucial crossroads in their lives.

Poor buggers. Tough shit.
